With nearly 20 years of experience as a broadcast journalist including work in media and marketing at the Medical Center, Joan Siefert Rose is well-prepared for her position as Michigan Radio’s new program director.

Rose has received many awards for news coverage including a George Foster Peabody Award; an Ohio State Award; a National Headliners Award; two national Clarion Awards from Women in Communications; a Michigan Association of Broadcasters Award as the top reporter in the state; “Outstanding On-Air Talent” by the Detroit Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television; and numerous state and regional awards.

Effective this week, Rose is responsible for the station’s programming as well as for supervising the station’s producers.

Detroit-area listeners will recognize Rose’s voice from her years working for WJR Radio in 1985-1993. She held a variety of on-air positions in the news and programming departments of WJR. She was co-host of the Afternoon Newscenter program, with responsibility for daily news segments, story assignments and extensive newswriting. She was a regular news anchor and substitute host for other interview programs, including the J.P. McCarthy Show, Midday Magazine and Focus. Her reporting work included coverage of major local and regional stories, breaking news, documentaries and political assignments, including the 1988 Democratic and Republican conventions. She was a regular contributor to the ABC Radio Network.

“I’m a journalist first,” Rose says. “There’s a great opportunity to provide compelling, original programming emphasizing news and information to Michigan Radio listeners. They are a sophisticated audience who deserve thoughtful coverage of events and an opportunity to have access to the wealth of culture and intellectual life of the University of Michigan. It’s clear that serious journalism is moving from commercial to public radio. There’s room for many different perspectives and backgrounds. This is the place to find a serious commitment to news as well as the excellent array of arts programming available only on public radio.”

Since July 1993, Rose has worked at the Medical Center. For two years she was the senior media coordinator in the Department of Public Relations. Along with maintaining contact with print and broadcast reporters nationwide, Rose developed and produced a weekly radio news report. Beginning in July 1995, she was the Senior Account Manager, Primary Care, at the Medical Center, responsible for developing and implementing the marketing and community relations program for the U-M Primary Care Network, a system of 30 health centers and physician practices in six southeastern Michigan counties.
