Romanian-born commentator Codrescu to speak

Romanian-born poet, author and radio commentator Andrei Codrescu will speak at a screening of the film Road Scholar at 7 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 12) at the Michigan Theater.

Codrescu’s commentaries are frequently heard on National Public Radio’s newsmagazine “All Things Considered.” He teaches English literature at Louisiana State University and is editor of Exquisite Corpse, a Journal of Books and Ideas.

Road Scholar chronicles Codrescu’s travels from coast to coast in a red 1968 Cadillac convertible, including stops in New Orleans, the Lower East Side of New York for a visit with Allen Ginsberg, the heart of Detroit where Codrescu once lived, the Nevada desert and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Road Scholar has been honored with a Chris Award, a CINE Golden Eagle and a Golden Gate Award from the San Francisco Film Festival.

Tickets to the film showing—$3.50 for members of Michigan Radio or Michigan Theater, $4.50 for students and senior citizens, and $5.50 for the public—and a party following the screening are available at the Michigan Theater box office, 668-8397. Admission to the party at the Red Hawk Bar & Grill is $5 plus whatever is ordered from the menu.

Codrescu’s visit is sponsored by Michigan Radio, the Department of Communication, and the Program in Film and Video Studies.
