Restructured Research Partnership Program offers funds in two new programs
The 12th round of the Research Partnership Program has been restructured “with the aim of improving the scholarly and research environment for both faculty and graduate students,” note Frederick C. Neidhardt and Nancy Cantor in a recent memo concerning the program. Neidhardt is acting vice president for research and Cantor is the dean of the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
Two new funding programs replace the Distinguished Research Partnership Program, which is no longer offered. The new programs—one to enable faculty to hire and assist doctoral students and the other to support innovative seminars and colloquia—are available to all instructional faculty, primary research staff and librarians.
Spring/Summer Research Grants will award a minimum of 40 grants to faculty to enable them to hire doctoral students to assist with their research and scholarly projects during the spring/summer terms. Unlike the past Distinguished Research Partnership program, there is no requirement that the proposed work be central to the student’s area of interest or part of a collaboration or larger effort.
Criteria for the awards emphasize the value of the research support to the scholarly achievement of the faculty applicant and the value of the experience to the doctoral student’s academic development. Grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded to faculty with the expectation that doctoral students will commit to work at least 200 hours toward the project.
The Distinguished Faculty and Graduate Student Seminars Program will provide awards to groups of faculty, students or graduate programs proposing innovative seminars and colloquia. Up to 10 grants of $5,000-$10,000 will be awarded for proposals that address areas of innovative interdisciplinary scholarship and complement the development of new research centers and training programs.
