The University commemorates the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. today (Jan. 17) with dozens of symposium- and unit-sponsored events.
Classes have been suspended and supervisors are encouraged to provide release time for staff to attend programs of interest to them.
The symposium opens at 10:30 a.m. at Hill Auditorium with a keynote speech by Charles H. Long, professor of religious studies and director of the Center for Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The annual Unity March will begin at noon on South University Street between Forest Street and Washtenaw Avenue, culminating in speeches on the Diag.
During the morning and afternoon, a number of panel discussions, lectures, workshops and peformances will be presented at various locations on campus.
A concert by the singing group, The Winans, will close the day’s events at 8 p.m. at the Power Center for the Performing Arts.
