In an effort to improve pedestrian safety, the university is working with the city of Ann Arbor to relocate the crosswalk on South State Street near the LSA Building. The new crosswalk will be located just north of the Michigan Union.
A university analysis indicates that more people now and in the future will be crossing at this location.
The work is scheduled to begin Saturday and last through Oct. 30, weather permitting. Striping and signing of the new crosswalk, as well as removal of the existing crossing, is anticipated to occur during the latter part of the week.
The crosswalks at South University Avenue and South State Street will remain in place.
Pedestrian, vehicular and bus traffic will be maintained through the area at all times.
University officials stated that while two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, lanes will be intermittently closed to northbound or southbound traffic to install the pedestrian features.
Motorists may wish to seek an alternate route to avoid slow moving traffic.
The sidewalk and curb removal-and-replacement operation is anticipated to take approximately three days and will require the temporary closure of the sidewalk on the east and west sides of State Street.
Pedestrians will be directed around the construction site utilizing existing walkways in front of the Michigan Union and UMMA.

Will there ever be a real traffic light at South University and State? That should be the priority. It is the most dangerously dysfunctional intersection of its size and density in this increasingly dense and dysfunctional city.
Ryan Rotter
Yeah, because more congestion is what we need. Why not put up a protected left too?
This would make the intersection even more impassable and make in even more dangerous to pedestrians who would have to walk between a (larger) sea of stopped cars.
