Administrative appointments
approved for seven individuals
Administrative appointments included:
Colin Day was reappointed as director of the U-M Press for a second five-year term, beginning Jan. 4.
George R. Carignan was reappointed as associate dean for graduate education and research in the College of Engineering for a two-year term, effective Feb. 1.
Lynn A. Conway, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was reappointed as associate dean in the College of Engineering for another year, beginning Jan. 1.
Janet A. Weiss, professor of organizational behavior and public policy, will serve as associate dean in the School of Business Administration for a three-year term, effective Jan. 1.
S. Roland Drayson, professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences, will serve as interim chair of the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, effective Jan. 1–June 30, 1993.
Sherman A. James, professor of epidemiology, will serve as associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Public Health for a three-year term, effective July 1, 1993.
Susan S. Lipschutz, adjunct associate professor of philosophy and senior associate dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, also will serve as assistant vice provost for academic affairs, effective Jan. 1.
$5.7 million in gifts accepted
The Regents accepted $5,725,338 in gifts received during November. The total included $2,881,645 from individuals, $1,408,944 from corporations, $917,822 from foundations, and $516,927 from associations and others.
Four receive tenured appointments
Tenured faculty appointments included:
Arvind Atreya, a faculty member at Michigan State University, associate professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, effective Jan. 1.
Daniel E. Koditschek, a faculty member at Yale University, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, effective Jan. 1.
Thomas C. Hales, a faculty member at the University of Chicago, associate professor of mathematics, effective Sept. 1, 1993.
Betsy Lozoff, a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, effective Jan. 1.
Renovation projects OK’d
The following renovation projects on the Ann Arbor campus were approved:
—“The annual classroom program will continue to concentrate on upgrading Central Campus classrooms and instructional auditoria in various buildings, estimated to cost $1,143,000,” said Vice President Farris W. Womack. “This year’s program will give first priority to upgrading the large number of classrooms in the School of Education Building.”
—“A recent study of the condition of several utility tunnels crossing under South State Street indicates that a 100-lineal-foot section of tunnel has deteriorated to the point that complete replacement is necessary,” Womack noted. The project is estimated to cost $900,000.
—One of two passenger elevators of Stockwell Residence Hall, originally installed in 1940, will be replaced at an estimated cost of $275,000.
