Gifts total $4.3 million
At their June meeting, the Regents formally accepted a total of $4,328,201 in gifts received by the University during May of this year.
The total included $2,126,824 from individuals, $790,644 from corporations, $1,042,975 from foundations, and $367,758 from associations and others.
New faculty appointments approved
Faculty appointments, with tenure, approved by the Regents at their meeting included:
Gary D. Fenstermacher, a faculty member at the University of Arizona, will be professor of education, effective Sept. 1.
Joyce E. Penner, division leader of the Global Climate Research Division, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, will become professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences, effective Sept. 1.
Virginia Richardson, a faculty member at the University of Arizona, will be professor of education, effective Sept. 1.
Regents approve
administrative appointments
Administrative appointments approved by the Regents included:
Daniel E. Atkins III was reappointed as dean of the School of Information for another five-year term, effective July 1, 1997. He also is professor of information and of electrical engineering and computer science.
Francis X. Blouin Jr. was reappointed as director of the Bentley Historical Library for another five-year term, effective July 1, 1996. He also is professor of information and library studies and of history.
Robert S. Holbrook, professor of economics, was reappointed as associate provost, effective July 1, 1996–Aug. 31, 1997.
John R. Birge, professor of industrial and operations engineering, was reappointed as chair of the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering, for a five-year term beginning July 1.
Sherman A. James, professor of epidemiology, was reappointed as associate dean for academic affairs of the School of Public Health for a three-year term beginning July 1.
Richard D. Woods, professor and interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will serve as chair of the department for a three-year term beginning July 1.
Jonathan E. Freedman, associate professor of English, will serve as acting director of the Program in American Culture, effective Sept. 1–Dec. 31.
William G. Rosenberg, professor of history, will serve as interim director of the International Institute, effective Sept. 22–Dec. 13.
H. David Humes, professor and interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, will serve as chair of the department for a two-year term beginning July 1.
