Final approval for Intercollegiate Soccer Stadium
The regents authorized issuing the Intercollegiate Soccer Stadium project for bids and awarding construction contracts provided the bids are within budget. The project will provide seating and amenities for 1,800 spectators of men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer games. Department of Athletics resources and gifts will fund the $6 million project that is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2010.
Infusion suite planned for East Ann Arbor Health and Geriatrics Center
To accommodate growth in non-cancer adult infusion services, the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC) plans a renovation of 5,000 gross square feet at the East Ann Arbor Health and Geriatrics Center to create an infusion suite with 10 infusion bays, along with associated support spaces. The $1.5 million project, funded from UMHHC resources, is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Emergency power to be upgraded at University Hospital
UMHHC will fund a $4 million project that will provide a comprehensive upgrade to the emergency power system infrastructure at the University Hospital, including interconnection with the emergency power system at the Cardiovascular Center. The project is slated for completion in the fall of 2010.

Retirements
Charles Apple, associate professor of communications and visual arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM-Flint, effective Aug. 31. He joined the university in 1990. Apple published in areas including organizational communications, communication ethics, mass media and film, and served as chair of the Department of Communications from 1996-98.
John Hagen, professor of psychology in LSA, and research professor for the Center for Human Growth and Development, effective Aug. 31. He joined the university in 1965. Hagen has done influential work on the development of attention and incidental memory. He was the chair of the Developmental Psychology Program from 1970-83 and 1995-99, director of the Center for Human Growth and Development from 1982-93 and executive director of the Society for Research in Child Development from 1989-2007.
Kenneth Lieberthal, professor of political science in LSA, and professor of business administration in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective May 31. He joined U-M in 1983 and was appointed as a William Davidson Professor of Business Administration and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, both in 1995. His research focused on Chinese politics and U.S.-China relations, and he was a faculty associate and director of the Center for Chinese Studies from 1986-89. Lieberthal was a fellow and director of the William Davidson Institute from 2001-09.
Noemi Mirkin, associate research science for the Biophysics Research Division in LSA, effective June 30. She received her Master of Science and doctoral degrees from U-M, and joined the university’s faculty in 1989. Mirkin lectured in physics and biophysics and was on the executive and program committees for the Biophysics Research Division. She served on the boards of multiple alumni associations and received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1999.
Elizabeth Sulzby, professor of education in the School of Education, effective May 31. She joined U-M in 1983. Sulzby specialized in child literacy development and her published work is credited for launching the research field of emergent literacy. She was president of the special interest group Literacy Development and Young Children from 1988-90 and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the National Council on Research in Language and Literacy.
John Topliss, professor of medicinal chemistry in the College of Pharmacy, effective June 30. Among his many achievements, Topliss is the inventor for 33 patents and was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1986. In 1998, he received the American Chemical Society’s Division of Medicinal Chemistry Award, and is a member of the American Chemical Society’s Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame.
