Residential College auditorium to be renovated
A $2.1 million renovation is planned for the Residential College auditorium addition to East Quad. The project, funded by LSA, will provide technology, lighting and seating upgrades, create a second fire exit, improve accessibility, and increase the efficiency of the air handling system. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
Lab renovation planned at EWRE
Three new research lab spaces for faculty and students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be created in a $1.2 million renovation of a relocated student lab at the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Building. The College of Engineering is funding the project that is scheduled for completion this fall.
University Hospital chiller plant to be expanded
Installation of a new cooling tower, piping and controls at University Hospital will address increased demand for cooling caused by new electronic medical equipment. The $3.25 million project will be funded from Hospitals and Health Centers’ resources and is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Tunnel and piping replacements continue on Central Campus
The planned replacement of sections of brick tunnel and utility piping on Central Campus will continue this year with the replacement of 600 feet of tunnel near the Diag and 125 feet of piping near Lorch Hall. The $6.6 million project will be funded from Utility resources and is scheduled for completion this fall.

Retirements
Stephen Cooper, professor of microbiology and immunology, Medical School, effective Jan. 2. In 1970 he joined U-M, where he worked with collaborator Charles Helmstetter to develop the Cooper-Helmstetter model of the process of chromosome replication and integration. This model remains one the fundamental elements of bacterial physiology and is taught as a first principle in every microbiology course.
Barbara Everitt Bryant, research scientist, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective Dec. 31. Bryant joined the university in 1993. In 1989 she was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as the director of the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce, the first woman to hold this post in its 200-year history. She also designed a number of sampling techniques and methodology still in use today.
