Renovations planned at Dennison
The auditoria that are home to the Saturday Morning Physics lectures at the Dennison Building are scheduled to receive updates, including accessibility improvements, new seating, new finishes, networking to support multimedia presentations and improve acoustics. The $1.75 million project is scheduled to be completed this summer.
Exterior of Dental school, Kellogg to be improved
The exteriors of the Dental Building and W. K. Kellogg Institute will be repaired. Selected areas of the brick walls will be removed and replaced to install weather-shedding flashing. Investment proceeds will fund the $1.6 million project, scheduled to be completed in summer 2009.
Interior work planned for nursing building
The School of Nursing Building will be renovated to restore interior finishes, doors, mechanical and electrical equipment, and lighting on the ground, first and second floors, and minor remodeling to select areas on the third and fourth floors. The School of Nursing and investment proceeds will fund the $2 million project, slated for completion this fall.
Bids sought for Stockwell Hall renovations
The regents approved issuing the Stockwell Hall Renovation project for bids and awarding construction contracts. In November the board approved the schematic design for the project that will thoroughly update the building’s infrastructure, including new heating, ventilation and air conditioning, new plumbing, fire detection and suppression systems, wired and wireless high-speed network access, renovated bath facilities and accessibility improvements. The $39.6 million project is scheduled to begin May 2008, with completion by summer of the following year. It is part of the Residential Life Initiatives launched in 2004 to revitalize and renovate student housing.
Design for new data center approved
The regents approved the design of the new Hospitals and Health Centers’ data center project to be located on North Campus. The new building, designed by the firm X-nth Inc., will be tornado-resistant and will allow continuous operations even if local utility service is interrupted. U-M Hospitals and Health Centers is funding the $50.9 million project scheduled for completion in spring 2010.
UMHHC to expand at Briarwood, Mott
Renovations at the Briarwood 2 and 4 buildings plan to expand the adult MedRehab program. Pediatric programs currently at Briarwood 4 will be relocated to Briarwood 2 to make room for the expansion, with both buildings receiving updates to infrastructure and finishes. The approximately $4.8 million project will be funded with U-M Hospitals and Health Centers’ resources and is expected to be completed in summer 2009.
A new moderate care suite will be created at Mott Children’s Hospital in response to high occupancy rates in the hospital’s intensive care units. DSA Architects will design a 2,300 gross square foot renovation on Mott level 5 to create the new suite. UMHHC resources will fund the $1.45 million project scheduled for completion this fall.

Retirement
George Johnson, professor of economics in LSA, effective Dec. 31, 2007. Johnson joined the University in 1966. From 1976-91 he held an additional appointment as a research scientist in the Institute of Public Policy Studies. He has written on a range of policy-related topics, including labor unions. He also studied lifetime earnings among academics and promotion patterns of women faculty. In 2006 he was elected a fellow of the Society of Labor Economists.
