Renovation approved for UH O.R.
Five existing procedure rooms in the University Hospital (UH) will be renovated to create two larger, licensed, modernized operating rooms. Though there are 24 other UH operating rooms, this project is made possible by the transfer of cases to the new Cardiovascular Center with its eight new operating rooms. The Hospitals and Health Centers will fund the $4 million project and the architectural firm of Harley Ellis Devereaux will design it. Construction is scheduled to be completed in Winter 2008.
Lighting improvements for Law School buildings
Quaint but insufficient lighting in the Law Quadrangle buildings will be replaced during the next two years. See story on page 9.
Taubman Medical Library to receive new elevators
The three elevators in the six-story Alfred Taubman Medical Library will be replaced during a phased, two-year schedule. The elevators are original equipment from the building’s construction in 1978 and have begun to require increased maintenance. Investment proceeds will fund the $1.5 million project.
Ingalls Substation duct bank
Additional electrical capacity will be provided to the Wall Street area in anticipation of future growth via a new underground utility duct bank that will be installed from the Ingalls substation. Funding for the $3.8 million project will be provided from Utility and Information Technology Central Services resources. The construction is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Two projects receive final approvals
Two construction projects—North Quad Residential and Academic Complex and the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory renovation—received final approval last week. Regents authorized staff to issue the projects for bids and award construction contracts provided the bids are within the approved budget.
North Quad, a unique combination of residential space for 460 students and academic space for five units, is expected to be completed in Summer 2010, at the corner of Huron and State streets. Demolition of the Frieze Building has been completed. Site preparation work, including securing the façade of the Carnegie Library, is underway.
The second project will renovate the Phoenix Memorial Laboratory building into space suitable for the research activities of the new Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute. The project is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2008.
Property purchase approved
Regents authorized staff to purchase property at 1024 Maiden Lane, which is contiguous to U-M property and across the street from the Kellogg Eye Center. A lease for tenants of the small house on the property will be accommodated until it terminates next June. A purchase price of $335,000 has been negotiated.
