The following actions were taken by the Board of Regents at its Jan. 18 meeting.
Pain clinic to move to Burlington
The Anesthesiology Pain Clinic will move from the Med Inn to the Burlington Office Center to co-locate with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Spine Program. This move will allow the two programs to merge their pain-management fellowship programs. Approximately 12,500 square feet of additional space in the Burlington Center will be leased, and renovations will be completed to accommodate the moves. The estimated project costs of $2.25 million will be funded from Hospitals and Health Centers (HHC) resources. The project is scheduled to be completed next winter.
Matthaei greenhouse to be refurbished
The Exhibition Greenhouse at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens will be refurbished to address needed infrastructure improvements. The facility, built in 1964, houses the University’s extensive exotic plant collection. Project improvements are expected to greatly increase the energy efficiency of the building. These include replacing the glazing; updating the ventilation, heating and cooling systems; and installing automated shades. Funding for the $1.65 million project budget will be provided from Matthaei resources, gifts and investment proceeds. The firm of Montgomery Smith will design the project, which is scheduled to be completed this fall.
Infant security system to be upgraded
The infant security system at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital will be upgraded with a new system that provides state-of-the-art protection of infants using technically advanced equipment. The engineering firm of Berbiglia Associates will design the project, which is scheduled to be completed this fall. The HHC will fund the $1.15 million project cost.
Hospital roof to be replaced
The University Hospital roof, more than 20 years old, will be replaced by fall 2008 with an ethylene propylene diene monomer roof. The HHC will fund the $7.9 million project.

Retirements
Dr. Lawrence Kuhns, professor of radiology in the Medical School, effective Dec. 31, 2006. He joined the University in 1973. Kuhns has focused his research on musculoskeletal radiology in children, especially trauma and applications of ultrasound. He has published 138 peer-reviewed publications and is lead author on four textbooks, including “Decision Making in Imaging.”
Jon Rush, professor of art in the School of Art & Design, effective Dec. 31, 2006. Rush joined U-M in 1962. He is a widely respected sculptor and educator. He was among a handful of artists to learn the secrets of lost wax bronze casting and to introduce this technique at American art schools. Rush designed the Wallenberg Medal, awarded annually to outstanding humanitarians.
Ruth Simmons, professor of health behavior and health education in the School of Public Health, effective Dec. 31. She joined the University in 1970. Her career has been devoted to the improvement of public-sector health systems in developing countries through teaching, research and policy and program development in family planning and related aspects of reproductive health.
Takeshi Takahara, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of art in the School of Art & Design, effective Dec. 31. He joined U-M in 1983. Takahara is regarded as one of the finest contemporary artist-printmakers of his generation. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and beyond. Takahara has held residencies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Slade School of the Art, London.
Phyllis Valentine, librarian, Library Systems at the University Library, effective Jan. 31. Valentine joined the University in 1974. She has been a leader in implementing technological solutions for managing the library’s bibliographic records and access systems. She co-led the library management system review which resulted in the selection and implementation of the current library management system.
Roger Verhey, professor of mathematics in the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters and professor of education in the School of Education, U-M-Dearborn, effective Dec. 31. He joined the University in 1965. Verhey has taught a generation of students pursuing careers in elementary and secondary education and produced numerous publications and presentations on mathematics education.
Karen Wolff, professor of music and former dean of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective Dec. 31. She joined U-M in 2000. Wolff had established a widely acknowledged national presence in the music world and served as a leader of major programs and schools of music. She led the school through a critical stage of development and transition while maintaining a high level of national prominence.
