Two University Hospital units will expand after renovations are completed in 2008 as part of an overall strategy by the Health System to increase capacity for hospital patients. The architectural firm of Integrated Design Solutions will design both projects.

Space vacated by the relocation of the Sleep Disorders Laboratory will be renovated to create a new intensive/intermediate care unit with 18 beds and two isolation rooms, along with nurse stations, clerical stations, equipment storage, waiting areas and office space. The project, which is estimated to cost $9.25 million, is scheduled to be completed in winter 2008.

The 10-bed Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit will add five beds in adjacent space vacated by the relocation of the Thoracic Intensive Care Unit. The renovation project will include completion of an access corridor between the hospital and the new Cardiovascular Center on the fourth level. The project, which is estimated to cost $4.2 million, is scheduled to be completed in spring 2008.

SPH to complete space

The recently completed addition to the Henry F. Vaughan Building (School of Public Health) includes approximately 11,000 gross square feet of unfinished space for future growth. The regents approved completing half of the shelled space on the third and fourth floors to house the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, the Life Sciences and Society program and the Center for Genomics and Public Health. These departments currently are located in leased space off campus. The School of Public Health will fund the estimated budget of $1.5 million. The project is scheduled to be completed next fall.

Concrete replacement to be completed in Michigan Stadium

The final phase of concrete replacement in Michigan Stadium will be completed by August 2007. Concrete and seats in six sections of the northeast corner of the stadium will be replaced during the project. Concrete was replaced in the remaining sections in the early 1990s and each year since 2004. The Athletic Department will fund the estimated $2.5 million project budget.

Abatement approved for PML renovation

In preparation for the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory renovation project, which was approved by the regents in May, the board Friday approved conducting asbestos abatement in the building. Investment proceeds will be used to fund the estimated $650,000 abatement project budget.

SAB to be issued for bids

The project to renovate portions of the interior of the Student Activities Building will be issued for bids and construction contracts awarded following regents approval. The renovation, which will enable students and visitors to more conveniently utilize services within the building, will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the offices of Admissions, Student Financial Operations and Financial Aid. A phased construction schedule will be administered in order to minimize disruption to the academic calendar. The project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2008.
