Coleman given high marks during annual review
Regent S. Martin Taylor, chair of the Compensation, Personnel and Governance committee of the board, said President Mary Sue Coleman gets high marks from the board for her performance in the past year. He cited her leadership with the Michigan Difference campaign, the M-PACT financial aid program developed for Michigan students, faculty retention and the challenge of state budget cuts. Taylor said the committee has approved a 3.5 percent salary increase for Coleman in recognition of her “many strengths and wonderful accomplishments this past year.” Coleman declined her first salary increase at U-M, citing the deep cuts that came from the state, and at her request her increase was limited to 2 percent last year. Taylor said the current increase is “prudent and fair, and reflects our collaborative confidence in the strength and direction of the University.” The increase brings Coleman’s total salary to $501,457.
Regents approve athletics bylaw changes
The board approved changes to Regents’ Bylaw 11.60, The Advisory Board on Intercollegiate Athletics: Functions. A paragraph in the bylaw describes the appointment process for the University representative in the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives and the parameters for the term of the appointment. The bylaw was changed to place accountability for the appointment with the president, improve the articulation of academic values in college sports, and put the appointment of the representative more in line with practices at other Big Ten universities. The representative will hold office for a term of five years, but may not serve unlimited terms as in the past.
Geriatrics Program moving to EAAHC
The U-M Health System Geriatrics Program will move next fall from the Cancer and Geriatrics Centers Building to the East Ann Arbor Health Center (EAAHC) to make room for expanded services for patients with cancer. The architectural firm of HarleyEllis will design the project. Nearly 8,000 gross square feet of EAAHC space will be renovated to create exam rooms, offices, a call center and support space for the Geriatrics Program. The estimated cost of the project, which will be funded by the Hospitals and Health Centers, is $2.2 million.
Two units to move out of Kresge
Two units in the Kresge Building complex will relocate to nearby Medical School space to allow for the future demolition of the Kresge buildings. The Medical School animal imaging facility will move into the new Biomedical Science Research Building next fall after 7,000 gross square feet of shelled space is completed. Polshek Partnership will design the project, which is estimated to cost $4.5 million.
The anechoic chamber laboratory of the Auditory Prosthesis Perception and Psychophysics laboratories will be relocated next summer to the Medical Science Unit 1. The labs use the echo-free chamber to conduct research to understand the mechanisms of electrically induced hearing. The project, which includes renovation of approximately 4,000 gross square feet of space, is estimated to cost $900,000.
Linear accelerator to be replaced
One of four University Hospital linear accelerators that provide radiation treatment to patients with cancer will be replaced due to declining performance. Each accelerator supports approximately 1,300 new patient cases per year. A new machine is estimated to cost $2 million. In addition, an existing treatment area and control room will be renovated, which will be designed by Integrated Design Solutions. The total project budget is $2.8 million.
Boiler to be replaced at Hoover plant
A boiler at the Hoover Avenue Heating Plant that generates steam to heat and cool buildings in the South Campus area will be replaced. Utility resources will fund the $850,000 project, which is expected to be completed in the spring.

Retirements
Dr. Robert Bartlett, professor of surgery in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1980. He is best known for the development of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a modified heart-lung machine used for patients with acute heart or lung failure that has dramatically improved the survival rate for infants, children and adults with this condition.
Stanley Berent, professor of psychology in the Medical School, LSA and School of Public Health, effective June 30. Berent joined U-M in 1979. He initiated postdoctoral training programs in psychology and neuropsychology and served as chief of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry. He received many research grants and is the author of more than 100 manuscripts, books and book chapters.
Dr. Kenneth Casey, professor of molecular and integrative physiology and professor of neurology in the Medical School, effective Aug. 31. He joined the University in 1966. His career focused on central nervous system pain mechanisms. Casey has done groundbreaking human clinical studies of the functional anatomy of pain systems. Casey has published more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and more than 40 book chapters.
Michael Flynn, research scientist in the Transportation Research Institute, effective March 15. Flynn joined U-M in 1969. He left in 1985 and returned in 1988. His work on manufacturing cost differences and manufacturer-supplier relationships for the joint U.S.-Japan automotive study became a critical early alert for companies in the U.S. industry as they faced tougher global competition.
Dr. William Kotowicz, the Roy H. Roberts Professor of Dentistry and professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, effective Aug. 31. He joined the University in 1969. He served as interim dean (1987-89), senior associate dean (1989-2005), acting dean (1995-96) and dean (1997-2003). He chaired the transition committee that orchestrated the reorganization of the school, and initiated and implemented a community-based clinical education model.
Martin Maehr, professor of education in the School of Education and professor of psychology in LSA, effective May 31. Maehr joined U-M in 1988. His research focused on motivation and achievement, school culture and climate, leadership and group processes, interpersonal relationships, and socio-cultural origins of achievement. He has published more than 100 papers in scholarly journals.
Dr. Bertram Pitt, professor of internal medicine in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1977. He began a series of large clinical trials, which have had a significant impact on the way we view current management of coronary heart disease and failure. He contributed more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and many textbook chapters and editorials.
Dr. Jeoffrey Stross, professor of internal medicine in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined U-M in 1973. He served as associate chair of the patient education program in internal medicine from 1983-94. He helped manage what has become one of the nation’s preeminent departments of internal medicine. He also pursued research in continuing medical education, which was published in leading journals.
Dr. Dennis Turner, clinical professor of dentistry and assistant dean for patient services in the School of Dentistry, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1982. He directed many clinical and didactic courses and was director of preclinical sciences and patient services and assistant dean for patient services. He designed and implemented the integrated preclinical science program, the patient/student monitoring system, and centralized record program.
Charles Williams, Jr., professor of biological chemistry in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined U-M in 1963. His entire career has been dedicated to the study of one family of flavoenzymes, which are enzymes containing the B-vitamin riboflavin. He developed a much-needed malaria prophylactic. This effort required him to coordinate six laboratories, both in the United States and abroad.
