Schematic design approved
A schematic design by Diamond and Schmitt Architects for the new Computer Science and Engineering Building was approved by the regents. In October, the regents had approved the building project to provide a state-of-the-art instructional and academic facility to
support computer science, information technology and student learning spaces for the College of Engineering. The four-story building will be built into the hillside west of the Dow Building on North Campus. Views from Hayward Avenue will feature the two upper stories, while four stories will be visible from the campus core. The $40 million building will be funded from College of Engineering reserves and gifts. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and be completed in winter 2006.

Retirements
Two faculty members were given the emeritus title. Those retiring are:
Warren Holmes, professor of psychology in LSA, and Wei Ying Wan, head of the Asia Library and librarian in the University Library.
Holmes joined the University in 1979. He conducted groundbreaking research on kin recognition and nepotism in animals, using several species of ground squirrels as models. His discoveries on kin recognition and kin favoritism provided the foundation for subsequent research in these areas and are considered to be general principles in the filed of animal behavior. Holmes twice received U-M’s Excellence in Education Award from LSA. His retirement was effective Dec. 31, 2002.
Wan was a librarian at U-M from 1964-66, then returned in 1969. He sustained a premier Asian materials collection while guiding significant changes in the Asia Library, including the creation of thousands of Chinese, Japanese and Korean records, and the development and integration of electronic resources and tools within the library. In 1998 he was invited by the Chinese Ministry of Culture to lead a delegation of East Asian Studies librarians to visit major Chinese libraries, archives and publishers. His retirement was effective March 31, 2003.
