City moving ahead with Fuller Road bridge project
The Regents approved granting of the roadway and sewer easements for the city’s Fuller Road bridge project.
Last fall, the city closed the Fuller Road bridge to heavy vehicles, including U-M buses, after discovering a structural flaw in the bridge. The bridge crosses the Huron River immediately west of the Fuller/Mitchell Field owned by the University.
“The city has developed a strategy to deal with the situation and repair the crossing without putting the road completely out of service during construction,” Vice President Farris W. Womack said. “This approach calls for the construction of a new bridge located immediately south of the existing structure during the summer of 1993. Once this bridge is complete, traffic will be moved onto it and the old bridge will be reconstructed in 1994.
“When the project is completed, there will be two bridges across the Huron River with four lanes of traffic-carrying capacity. The city intends to widen the remaining section of Fuller Road between the bridge and Bonisteel Boulevard to four lanes to provide a full four-lane carrying capacity between the University’s Central and North campuses.”
The Regents approved granting the right-of-way easement for the bridge, a 17-foot wide strip along the south side of Fuller Road and a widening near the river to accommodate the structural fill necessary to support the bridge abutments.
The Regents also approved a 20-foot sewer easement along the west edge of the Fuller/Mitchell Field adjacent to the existing fence line. It will not disturb the existing baseball diamonds in the area and will allow continuation of sewer service from Cedar Bend and part of North Campus, Womack noted.
Boylan will serve as vice provost for the arts
School of Music Dean Paul C. Boylan also will serve as vice provost for the arts.
His additional appointment is effective July 1. He will continue to serve as dean and will have oversight responsibilities for the School of Art and the Museum of Art.
Boylan holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. from the U-M. He was a teaching fellow and instructor prior to being appointed assistant professor of music in 1969. He was named associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1977.
He served as director of the U-M Divisions at the National Music Camp at Interlochen in 1971–75 and as associate dean of academic affairs in the School in 1974–79. He has been dean since 1979.
Administrative appointments ok’d
Administrative appointments approved included:
Clarence Earl Coleman Jr., associate professor of voice, was reappointed assistant dean for minority affairs in the School of Music.
Robert F. Dernberger, professor of economics, who now serves as interim director of the Center for Chinese Studies, will become director of the Center for a one-year term beginning July 1.
Shuen-fu Lin, professor of Chinese, will serve as director of the Center for Chinese Studies for a three-year term beginning July 1, 1994.
Eve J. Higginbotham, associate professor of ophthalmology, will serve as assistant dean for faculty affairs in the Medical School, effective May 1.
Kristine A. Siefert, associate professor of social work, will serve as assistant dean for research in the School of Social Work, effective July 1.
Clarita Mays, interim assistant dean of student and multicultural affairs in the School of Social Work, will become assistant dean of student and multicultural affairs, effective July 1.
