Regents approve name changes for two schools
At their meeting last week, the Regents gave approval for the School of Information and Library Studies to change its name to the School of Information. The Regents also approved a name change for the School of Art, which will now be known as the School of Art and Design.
“We will continue our commitment to educating graduates as librarians and provide them with the knowledge and skills required of emerging information technologies,” said Daniel E. Atkins, dean of the School of Information. “By offe ring an expanded curriculum that includes librarianship, next generation systems architecture, human-computer interaction, organizational information systems, archives and records management, and digital publishing, we are creating an academic program tha t brings together in a synergistic way these different specializations.”
The School of Art and Design sees itself as the focal point for intellectual inquiry carried out through visual means—inquiry that results in art, designs and visual principles that can contribute to scholarship and creative work in virtually ev ery discipline on campus.
“In order to respond to the expanding range and context of art and design and become a leader in fostering new initiatives, we have expanded our mission from the single objective of educating and training artists and designers to include info rming and influencing others through the creation and dissemination of original ideas and visual work,” said Allen J. Samuels, dean of the School of Art and Design. “We also seek to provide a research environment that supports scholarly collabo ration, integration of emerging technologies and intellectual inquiry of the highest quality.”
