Construction of the Tennis Center, on a phased basis as funding is identified, was approved by the Regents at their April meeting.
The project, first approved by the Regents in 1990, will be located on State Street adjacent to the U-M Golf Course.
“In order to meet the program requirements for a Tennis Center, it is necessary to plan for a complex that would ultimately include 12 outdoor and eight indoor courts,” said Executive Vice President Farris W. Womack.
“In addition, supporting service facilities, lockers, showers, etc., will be required. Parking, landscaping and sitework will also be provided. Cost of the completed facility is estimated to be $5 million to $6 million.
“The Department of Athletics has given the development of a Tennis Center a high priority and has included it as a key project for the Campaign for Michigan and internal funding. To date, approximately $2.1 million has been received or pledged,” Womack explained.
“Given the cost of a complete facility and the time required to raise these funds, we are proposing to proceed with the project on a phased basis as funding is identified. A detailed financing plan for all or any portion of this project will be presented to the Regents for approval.”
The first phase is estimated to cost $4.5 million and would prepare the site, provide all utilities, provide for construction of a building, and for completion of eight indoor courts.
