Regents appoint two faculty members to named professorships

Slemrod holds Sparks-Whirlpool chair

Joel B. Slemrod, professor of business economics, will also hold the Jack D. Sparks-Whirlpool Corporation Research Professorship of Business Administration.

His appointment, effective Nov. 1, was approved by the Regents at their October meeting.

Funds for the professorship were provided by the Whirlpool Corporation in honor of Jack D. Sparks, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of Whirlpool Corporation.

“Dr. Slemrod is acknowledged to be one of the preeminent business economics and tax scholars in the country,” said B. Joseph White, dean of the School of Business Administration. “He is nationally recognized as an outstanding researcher who has provided major contributions to the field of tax policy research.

“He is a prolific author, with two books published since 1990 and a third forthcoming, and frequent articles in some of the nation’s prestigious publications.

“In addition, Prof. Slemrod is a model citizen of the academic community, serving most recently as a member of the Business School Executive Committee and as chair of the School’s business economics area.”

Slemrod, who received his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1980, joined the U-M faculty in 1979. In 1989 he was promoted to professor of economics and of business economics and public policy. He also is director of the Office of Tax Policy Research.
