Reading and Learning Skills Center closes after 40 years of service
The Reading and Learning Skills Center, a unit of the Institute for Human Adjustment (IHA) for more than 40 years, closed June 30.
After a review conducted by IHA administration, and consultation with a faculty committee during Fall 1995, the Center’s closing was recommended to the Provost.
Robert L. Hatcher, director of the IHA, wrote to deans, directors and department heads that the support work done by the Center is of special concern to the University. “Approximately 60 undergraduate and 10 graduate students per year have sought help, on a fee-for-service basis, for academic concerns during each year,” he wrote. “The Reading Center staff have helped students with their reading and study skills, paper-writing skills, time management, and test-taking skills . . . The closing of the RLSC will shift the burden to individual units and colleges for helping students find the supplementary academic support that they need.”
The following is a sampling of programs and units across campus that can provide some of the services that were offered by the RLSC:
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) offers academic assistance to students with disabilities. SSD can loan computers; provide portable spellcheckers; offer support groups; and help with reading, writing and test-taking skills.
The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) offers a series of learning skills workshops related to research for students in the program.
The English Composition Board (ECB) offers the Writing Workshop, where any LS&A-enrolled student can receive help with any academically related writing project.
Residence halls sponsor ongoing tutorial programs for residents. Living-learning programs, such as the 21st Century Program, the Residential College, and Women in Science and Engineering, incorporate tutoring into the living-learning experience. Residence hall staff also can refer students to academic support resources on campus.
