A number of special programs will be carried this month by WFUM/TV28,
U-M-Flint’s public television station. The station is carried on Columbia Cable Channel 26 in Ann Arbor.
Programs include the series “I’ll Fly Away,” Mondays at 8 p.m. The series begins Oct. 11 with a new 90-minute movie, “Then and Now,” featuring series stars Sam Waterson and Regina Taylor. The movie was written especially by the series’ creators to introduce the public PBS broadcast.
“I’ll Fly Away” addresses issues of racism, prejudice and civil rights in the American south. Broadcast of all 1991–92 and 1992–93 episodes will begin Oct. 18.
“The Look,” which “strips away the glitz and glamour of international fashion to look at the complex fabric of interests that lines every garment,” will be shown at 9:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and Oct. 18.
The programs take apart the fashion world, cutting through labyrinthine licensing deals, the mystique of the designer label and the meaning of style, unveiling the interdependent relationship between the fashion industry, media, financiers and consumers.
“Frontline” will open its 12th season at 9 p.m. Oct. 12 with “The Heartbeat of America,” the story of General Motors—the world’s largest industrial company and the symbol of corporate America’s once golden age of optimism.
In co-production with the Center for Investigative Reporting, “Frontline” will examine how GM went from being the undisputed number-one car company to suffering a $23.5 billion loss last year—the biggest corporate loss on record.
The program draws on interviews with current and former GM board members, executives, designers, workers and automotive analysts, and concludes with a look at the challenges facing GM in a rapidly changing world.
Singer/songwriter Billy Joel will be featured on “In the Spotlight” at 9 p.m. Oct. 13.
In the special, Joel performs and talks about making music, giving viewers a personal look inside his songwriting process as he creates the music for his new album, “River of Dreams.”
