The Office of the General Counsel reminds individuals with responsibility for grading students or who have access to student grades that University policies and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protect the privacy of all student records.
Information about students, including academic performance, should not be released in writing or orally unless specifically authorized under these policies and law.
Even within the University, information should be released only to those faculty and staff members who need to know the information, consistent with their official University responsibilities.
Other limited exceptions are explained in the University policy, which is reproduced each term in the Time Schedule.
Persons responsible for teaching assistant (TA) hiring and training should ensure that all TAs are fully informed about the policy.
