LS&A senior Denise C. Bell has been awarded a Power Exchange Scholarship for two years of study beginning next fall at Magdalene College of Cambridge University.
Bell, who is from Lapeer, will complete a bachelor’s degree in history from the U-M in May 1993. A 1989 graduate of Lapeer West High School, she plans to study European history and politics, with special attention to British history, at Cambridge.
The Power Exchange Scholarships were established in 1968 by the Power Foundation of Ann Arbor. Two scholarships are awarded annually, for one U-M graduate to go to Cambridge and for one Cambridge graduate to study at U-M.
The Power Scholarship provides tuition, academic fees, room and board, an expense stipend including an allowance for travel in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, and round-trip transportation.
Regents Emeritus Eugene B. Power (K.B.E., hon.) is president of the Power Foundation an honorary fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. President James J. Duderstadt; Sir David Calcutt, Q.C., Master of Magdalene College; Lady Calcutt; and Anthony Hanscomb, Magdalene’s development director, attended the announcement of this year’s award in Power’s office Nov. 17.
An honor student throughout her high school and college careers, Bell was one of 14 students in the nation to receive the Beinecke Scholarship this year. She also has received Lucile B. Conger Alumnae Group and Michigan Competitive Scholarships and the LS&A Scholarship. Although she concentrated on history and English as an undergraduate, Bell intends to focus on history and politics in graduate school.
“I am shifting my focus because one day I want to be active in politics, and I need to understand the historical aspect of politics and government if I am to contribute to them effectively,” Bell says.
Her extracurricular activities include mentoring in the University Mentorship Program, volunteering for SafeWalk and co-organizing the Alice Lloyd House fund drive for United Way. As a member of College Democrats, she served as deputy registrar for the presidential election and other elections.
