Assault in a family housing unit
A 22-year-old man was arrested April 15 after allegedly kidnapping his former girlfriend from an Eastern Michigan University building, forcing her to drive to a U-M apartment on North Campus that was leased by a family member and assaulting her. Neither the man nor the survivor is affiliated with U-M. As of our printing deadline, the suspect is in the Washtenaw County Jail without bail pending a court date.
Student accused of fondling
A 20-year-old male student was arrested April 20 after a female student reported she was inappropriately groped in a West Quadrangle stairwell. The county prosecutor has authorized an arrest warrant for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Incident at child care center resolved
Staff at the child care center in 400 North Ingalls Building filed a report with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) March 28 indicating an unknown man had picked up a crying child on the playground, spoke to her, then put her back on the ground. Parents of all children at the center were notified and meetings were held with center staff, parents, DPS and human resources. The man later contacted DPS officers, explained his actions, which were not of a criminal nature. No charges will be sought.
Two small fires result in limited damage
South Quadrangle was evacuated for less than an hour May 1 after a small fire ignited in a microwave. Damage was contained to the oven and no one was injured.
A car caught fire in the parking lot behind the Intramural Sports Building April 30. No other vehicles were damaged and no injuries occurred. The cause of the fire was unknown.
Last night of classes remains quiet
Approximately 4,000 people gathered in the South University business district April 17 as students celebrated the last day of classes. Campus sidewalks also were crowded with people enjoying the warm night air. A few dozen young people, dressed only in underwear, made several efforts to run through the crowd on South University Avenue. Three people, including two students, were arrested for indecent exposure; one non-affiliated person for driving with a suspended license; and one non-affiliate for marijuana possession. DPS officers also issued 12 tickets for a variety of violations.
Reports of theft of unsecured belongings continue
Several reports a day are made with DPS officers for the theft of property that has been left unsecured or unattended for anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Laptop computers, purses, wallets, backpacks, briefcases and credit cards are popular targets for thieves. Members of the University community are cautioned to lock their desks, offices, and rooms whenever they are not present. Leaving belongings unsecured in libraries, conference rooms, labs or gymnasiums even for a few minutes provides opportunities for theft.
