Warrants issued for residence hall crimes
Several high profile crimes have occurred in recent weeks on campus, resulting in crime alerts issued to the community, rewards offered for information and warrants issued for arrests. Most notably, two home invasions were reported Feb. 2 in East Quadrangle and Feb. 6 in West Quadrangle. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued crime alerts for each incident.
In the first incident, two males reportedly entered a female student’s room in East Quad through a partially open door about 7:40 p.m. Allegedly, one of the suspects put his hand over her mouth, while the other man brandished a black handgun. The student was able to free herself and scream for help. The suspects fled. They are described as having medium-dark complexion, approximately 20 years old, and less than 6-feet-tall. One man was described as having braided hair with rubber bands on the ends under a dark knit-stocking hat.
A $2,000 reward is being offered by DPS and the Housing Division for information leading to the successful arrest and prosecution of suspects involved in the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Tim Shannon, (734) 763-1131, or U-M’s Anonymous Tip-line, (800) 863-1355.
In the West Quad incident, a female student returned to her unlocked room to find an unknown man inside. He told her he was looking for a friend and left. The resident says her laptop computer had been disconnected and moved. The man was described as 18–21 years old, 5-feet-7-inches tall with a medium complexion, short black hair shaved close on the sides, a thin mustache and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing dark baggy jeans and a multi-colored textured shirt.
Warrant for arrest
DPS has a warrant for the arrest of Ronald Tyree Richardson, 26, of Ann Arbor, for alleged larceny from a building involving an LCD projector theft. Richardson also is wanted on two other felony warrants from other agencies. He is 5-feet-8 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Anyone with information leading to his arrest should contact DPS or their local police agency.
Thirty-seven LCD projectors have been reported stolen from U-M buildings since December 2000.
DPS investigates suspicious activity
On Feb. 1, a staff member at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) reported to DPS that he interrupted an unknown man who was removing hinge pins from his office door. A short time later, a DPS officer interrupted two men, one who fit the description from the ISR incident, who reportedly were attempting to break into a car in the Church Street parking structure. The two suspects were apprehended and DPS is investigating the incidents.
Man pleads guilty to unlawful entry
On Jan. 26, a resident of West Quad reported that she woke up to find an unknown man in her bed sleeping. He woke up and fled. Following a DPS investigation, an 18-year-old man from Bloomfield Hills, who is not affiliated with the University, pleaded guilty in 15th District Court to unlawful entry and being a minor in possession. Unlawful entry is a 90-day misdemeanor. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 14.
Crime alert cancelled
In January, DPS also cancelled a December crime alert for a home invasion Dec. 3 at the Law Quadrangle after two local teens pleaded guilty Jan. 9 in connection with the incident. One of the teens also was arraigned Jan. 4 on two charges of larceny in a building. The thefts had occurred in late 2001 in West Quad and Tisch Hall.
