Search continues for suspects in three robberies
Female staff member robbed, stabbed Dec. 7
Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers continue their search for a man in connection with an armed robbery and assault of a female U-M staff member Dec. 7. The woman was walking near the Michigan League between 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. when she was confronted by an unknown man. She reported to DPS officers that the man took her wallet, containing credit cards, identification and some money, and then stabbed her in the leg with a knife. She was treated for the wound and released from University Hospital that day.
The man, last seen leaving the area on foot, is described as about 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall with a large build. He was wearing a black hood, a brown jacket and dark pants.
Nov. 7 strong-armed robbery near Martha Cook
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is looking for a man in connection with a strong-armed robbery that occurred at approximately 7:18 a.m. Nov. 7 outside the Martha Cook residence. The victim was grabbed and wrestled to the ground. The suspect demanded money, which was removed from the victim’s pocket. No weapons were seen or implied. The assailant fled on foot, eastbound on South University Avenue.
The suspect was described as a male with brown eyes, who may have a mustache. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs between 180 and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a brown ski mask with eye and mouth cutouts, a blue hooded sweatshirt and black gloves.
Dec. 2 robbery near Palmer Drive
DPS officers are looking for a suspect who allegedly robbed a victim at knifepoint at approximately 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2. The victim and suspect were walking in opposite directions on the gravel footpath at the southwest part of the N25 staff parking lot on Palmer Drive. As he approached the victim, the suspect reportedly said, “Give me a dollar” and the victim observed a 4–6-inch knife blade at his side. The victim gave the suspect $1 and the suspect walked away.
The suspect is described as a Black male in his late teens or early 20s, about 5′ 8″ tall and weighing around 160 pounds. He is of medium build, medium complexion and his hair is described as a 3/4-inch afro style. He was wearing dark clothing.
DPS officers urge anyone who has information about any of the cases above to call 763-1131.
Suspect held in bomb threat
A 39-year-old male is incarcerated in the Wash-tenaw County Jail following a Jan. 2 bomb threat. The suspect allegedly phoned in a report that a bomb had been placed on the 2nd floor of the North Ingalls Building. He did not identify himself during the call.
Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers investigated the threat and arrested the suspect Jan. 6. The man, who is not affiliated with the University, is charged with making a false report, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison. He will remain in jail until his Jan. 19 preliminary trial.
Two arrested for breaking into cars
An 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were arrested Dec. 29 in connection with a rash of automobile breaking-and-entering reports earlier in 1999. The two, who are not affiliated with the University, are charged with several counts of breaking and entering, and may face up to four years in prison. A preliminary trial is scheduled for Jan. 19 for the younger man, and the 19-year-old waived the right to preliminary trial. No court date has been set.
Man arrested for sexual misconduct at Union
A 32-year-old man, not affiliated with the University, will face charges of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct at a Feb. 7 trial. He is accused of entering a phone booth with a woman and touching her breasts and other parts of her body while she spoke with her father on the phone. The Dec. 17 incident allegedly occurred in the Michigan Union. The man was arrested Dec. 22 and, after waiving a preliminary examination, was released on a $100 bond.
DPS, Ann Arbor police investigating ‘supersoaker’ incidents
DPS and Ann Arbor Police officers are investigating several complaints from victims who were sprayed in the face by several youths in a passing car. The substance contained in the “supersoaker” squirt guns is being determined by laboratory analysis.
DPS Deputy Director James Smiley says the suspects have been identified and DPS expects that the chemical used will be determined to be household bleach. The mid-November attack occurred in the 200 block of Fletcher St.
