Damage estimates reach $250,000 in two fires

Fires in the Law Quad and Medical Science I buildings have caused an estimated $250,000 in damages. A May 7 blaze in an office area of Med Sci I was reported to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at approximately 9 a.m. DPS officers and the Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to the fire, which was later determined to have been caused by a faulty fan. DPS officials estimate damages at $50,000.

A fire in residence section A of the Law Quadrangle called out the Ann Arbor Fire Department and DPS officers at 3:22 a.m. on May 9. Three students were treated for smoke inhalation and released. One room was gutted by the fire and smoke and heat damage have totaled approximately $200,000 according to DPS and Office of Risk Management officials.

Man arrested on assault, destruction charges

A man is under arrest and has been charged with unlawful entry, malicious destruction of property over $100 and domestic assault after he allegedly assaulted his estranged wife, who is a student. DPS officers responded to a call for help at Northwood Housing II at 7:30 p.m. on May 12 and issued a warrant after observing the man. He was arraigned May 5 and entered a plea of not guilty. He has been released on a $2,500 cash bond.

Officers investigate sexual assault

DPS officers have investigated and arrested a man who allegedly sexually assaulted his 17-year-old stepdaughter May 7 in a Family Housing unit. DPS officers charged the man with criminal sexual assault II. He plead not guilty and was released May 10 on a $1,000 bond. A preliminary examination is scheduled for May 20.

Student charged with sexual assault

A male student has been charged with criminal sexual conduct III, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in jail, following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted a female student. DPS officers arrested the man May 13 and a preliminary examination is set for May 27. He was released on personal bond after entering a plea of not guilty.

DPS concludes investigation in forgery case

DPS officers arrested a 21-year-old female student employee on April 29 following an investigation that began Jan. 30. She has been charged with forgery after she allegedly forged documents involving tuition loan applications and promissory notes for an undetermined amount of money. She was arraigned in 15th District Court on April 29 and a preliminary investigation was held May 13. A trial is scheduled July 2.
