Man arrested for obstructing officer
A 37-year-old man not affiliated with the University was arrested Jan. 17 and charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer was responding to a report of fighting in the Anderson Room at the Michigan Union about 2 p.m. The man was belligerent and abusive and refused to move, threatening the officer.
He was arraigned Jan. 18 and bound over for trial at a preliminary hearing Jan. 29. A pretrial hearing in Washtenaw County Circuit Court is slated for Feb. 24. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
Nurse arrested on narcotics charge
DPS officers arrested a nurse at University Hospital Jan. 22 and charged him with fraudulently diverting narcotics from the hospital. He was arraigned the same day in 15th District Court, then released on personal bond.
The man waived a Feb. 4 preliminary hearing and was bound over to Washtenaw County Circuit Court. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for March 4. Fraudulent diversion of narcotics is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.
Walker honored at DPS award ceremony
Mary A. Walker, a major gift officer in the Department of Athletics, received the Citizen’s Public Safety Award for Lifesaving at a DPS ceremony in January. Walker and Laura Rubin, not affiliated with the University, are credited with saving the life of a swimmer who hit his head on the side of the pool at Canham Natatorium, breaking his neck. Their quick action resuscitating the victim using exactly the correct rescue protocol saved the man’s life, according to Capt. James Smiley.
Computer theft on the rise
Smiley reports that in one week he has received reports of two computers stolen from the University Hospitals, one laptop from the clinical faculty offices, one computer from the Dow Building and one from Seeley House, and several thefts of parts from computers in the Institute for Social Research.

Armed robbery at Palmer Field reported A female student who was returning to her room in Couzens Hall reported that she was robbed by a man who showed her a knife on Jan. 23 at about 8 p.m. She reported that the assault occurred in the 100 block of Observatory St., near the southwest corner of Alice Lloyd Residence Hall. She gave the man all the money she had with her, $4 and some change, and he fled on foot. DPS officers are investigating the incident.
