DPS looking for suspect in robbery
Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sgt. Kevin McNulty says officers are still searching for a man who stopped a female student on the Washtenaw Avenue footbridge near the Central Campus Recreation Building and demanded money. The victim, who was approached at about 1:15 a.m. Jan. 9, said she didn’t see a weapon, but complied with his demand, and then used the emergency phone at the end of the bridge to call for help.
Police are searching for a male, approximately 1920 years old, 5’8″, weighing about 150 pounds with a dark complexion and a round clean-shaven face. He was reported to be wearing a dark-colored, zipped, hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, and dark jeans.
Anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of the suspect should call DPS, 763-1131.
Cash, pizza taken at gunpoint
A pizza delivery driver reported that he was robbed at approximately 3:25 a.m. on Jan. 13. He reported to DPS officers that he was trying to deliver pizza to a North Campus apartment, but was told that no one there had ordered pizza. As he left, he was confronted by two men wearing dark clothing. One held a handgun to his head, and the other took money and the food and both fled on foot, he told police.

Man rescued at Canham Natatorium
DPS officers responded to a call for help on Jan. 8 at 12:40 p.m. when a 67-year-old man who had been swimming laps at Canham Natatorium collapsed after hitting his head at the end of the pool. When officers arrived, two staff members already had pulled the man from the water and were administering CPR. The victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital in critical condition, but officers say his condition has now improved.
Auto theft on campusreaches record number
In December six vehicles were reported stolen from University lots and parking structures, bringing the total for 1997 to 52. The total for 1996 was 42. DPS Capt. James Smiley told the Record that officers have recovered several of the vehicles at Detroit area “chop shops” where they have been dismantled. Most of the recently reported missing vehicles have been sport/utility-class vehicles, almost all Jeep Grand Cherokee models built in 1996 or 1997.Anyone who sees suspicious individuals in any of the University’s structures or lots is encouraged to call the DPS Detective Bureau, 764-8559, or give information anonymously by calling the Witness Information Network, (800) 863-1355.
