Forced entry found at two burglaries
Two burglary reports were investigated by DPS officers in August. An elevator machine room door in the Executive Residence was reported Aug. 21 to have been forced open in recent days. Several tools and other equipment were reported missing.
At the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center offices, an office door was found open Aug. 14 when staff reported for work. Pry marks were found on the door frame and door. Later it was determined that two laptop computers were missing from other offices in the department.
Two arsons reported in August
Minimal damage was reported to have occurred in two separate arson incidents in August. On Aug. 9 a door decoration in Markley Hall was found burning. Staff extinguished the fire without incident. On Aug. 6 an East Hall custodian reported that he had found a toilet seat in a men’s restroom had been scorched in recent days. Both investigations were closed after no leads were found.
Stolen van located the next day
A local youth is being investigated for joy-riding in a van stolen from a U-M parking lot. The 12-year-old boy’s mother called police Aug. 18 when she found her son attempting to drive an unknown van. The boy reportedly had driven the van into a pole at a nearby apartment complex but was not hurt. The van, used by a U-M contractor to shuttle employees to a worksite, had been reported stolen the previous day from Lot SC-22 near the Varsity Tennis Center. The case has been submitted to the juvenile division at the county prosecutor’s office.
Charges denied in assault complaint
A 49-year-old local man told U-M police that a 47-year-old man had threatened him with a hammer and a knife after the victim refused to give the suspect money. The incident reportedly occurred Aug. 15 under the bridge over East Medical Center Drive. The two men told police they were living under the bridge. The suspect was released the next day when the prosecutor’s office declined authorizing an arrest warrant in the case.
