Two stolen vehicles recovered

Two vehicles that were reported stolen from campus parking lots in January have been recovered. A staff person reported parking his brother’s 1997 Toyota Jan. 8 in a visitor parking space at Lot W18 across from West Quadrangle. When he returned to the space later that night, he discovered the vehicle was not there and filed a report with the Department of Public Safety. The following day a DPS parking enforcement officer located the vehicle illegally parked on Kennedy Drive. After the vehicle was checked for damage and evidence, it was returned to the owner.

A U-M fleet van assigned to the Office of the Provost was reported stolen Jan. 12 from Lot W13 near the Student Activities Building. It was last seen Dec. 23 as it was driven by an authorized person. On Jan. 20 the Ann Arbor Police located the van broken down on Huron Parkway. Before the officer could arrange to have the van towed, a man claiming to be the driver appeared, had a friend bring him gas and drove away before the officer discovered the van had been reported stolen. A suspect was identified from that encounter and the following day, the van was found returned to Lot W13. DPS has submitted the results of the investigation to the prosecutor’s office for review.
