Sexual assault reported near Perry Building
A U-M student told the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) that an unknown man approached her as she was walking home about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 3. He reportedly said something to her in Spanish, then grabbed her and forced her behind a house across from Perry Building, where he assaulted her before fleeing on foot.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male about 20-25 years old, medium build and height, with a goatee and mustache. He possibly was wearing khaki shorts. Police found a hat believed to belong to the suspect that is charcoal colored, has a Hard Rock Café emblem on the front, and the words “Love all, Serve all” on the back.

Purse snatched in Regents’ Plaza
A U-M student reported to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) that an unknown man grabbed her purse and fled as she sat on a bench in Regents’ Plaza about 8 p.m. Aug. 4. The man, who reportedly fled on foot south on Thompson Street, is described as white, 18-20 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a thin build, blonde hair in a buzz cut and glasses. He last was seen wearing a grey T-shirt, medium-colored cargo shorts and white tennis shoes.

Cab driver arrested for felonious assault
Two taxi cab drivers were engaged in a verbal dispute July 6 outside of the Michigan Union. When one man was leaving the scene, he reportedly attempted to strike the other driver with his vehicle. Aaron Hockman, 47, of Ann Arbor was arrested that night for felonious assault with a motor vehicle. The victim did not report any injuries. At his preliminary hearing Aug. 6, Hockman was bound over for trial to Washtenaw County Circuit Court.
Thieves gained access through unlocked windows
Two burglaries of offices were reported to DPS in July in which building access apparently was gained through unsecured windows.
In mid-July, one or more people apparently climbed through an upper-level office window in the Hatcher Graduate Library and left with University property. Sometime after closing July 11, several computers and monitors, a wall-mounted television and other property were taken. The investigation is continuing.
On July 31 staff at one of the Briarwood medical buildings reported to DPS that several laptop computers and other equipment with a total estimated value of $7,000 were taken overnight. Evidence indicated the thief entered through a ground-floor window.
Two arrested for Markley Hall burglaries
Two Markley Hall residents were arrested Aug. 6 in connection with several recent home invasions at Markley Hall. As of late last week, they were awaiting arraignment. During some of the home invasions, room doors or windows had been left unsecured and when residents returned to their rooms, they discovered computers or other electronic items missing.
Stolen moped recovered after sale listing
A moped that was reported stolen from a Medical Campus parking lot July 24 was recovered after the owner spotted the vehicle listed for sale on the Internet. Officers with the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety made contact with the advertiser and arranged to meet with him to explore purchasing the vehicle. Subsequently the moped was recovered and the 17-year-old Pittsfield Township resident was arrested after a brief foot chase.
Ann Arbor man arrested after fight
An 18-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested July 17 following a fight on the Diag in which a gun was brandished and punches were thrown. Marques Owens was arraigned Aug. 7 for assault and battery. Two 17-year-olds told DPS they were walking on the Diag when they were approached by four or five others. One of the assailants produced a black handgun and held it against one of the victims. When the victim shoved the gun aside, the assailant reportedly punched the victim, while another suspect punched the second victim. Everyone then dispersed and the gun was dropped. Later it was determined that the gun was an airsoft pistol. Owens was located by police officers in the 500 block of Church Street, where he was arrested. The two victims did not require medical attention.
Camper reports sexual assault
A 15-year-old participant in an academic camp has been arraigned on two counts of sexual assault in connection with an incident July 20. Reportedly the suspect forcibly assaulted a fellow camper in a West Quad residence hall room. The suspect posted $5,000 bond and is awaiting a pre-trial hearing scheduled Aug. 22.
Two separate assaults reported by patients
Two reports of sexual assault, each involving patients, were filed with DPS in August.
On July 30 a 65-year-old woman told police that just prior to being discharged from the University Hospital two days earlier, she had been fondled by a person she thought was a staff member. As she waited for discharge, a man dressed in scrubs had entered her room, stated he needed to check her vital signs then reached in her shirt. The investigation is continuing.
DPS was called to the Dental School July 24 to assist staff members who were trying to get a patient to leave. Reportedly the man had inappropriately grabbed a staff person during a previous visit in May, so staff no longer wanted to provide dental services to the man. The DPS case was closed because the staff person did not want to pursue charges.
