Vending machines vandalized
Over the holiday break, six incidents of vandalism of vending machine areas were reported. Damage is still being evaluated, reports Department of Public Safety (DPS) Capt. James Smiley, but in addition to theft of goods and money, some machines were severely damaged.
Smiley urges anyone who may have information about the incidents to call the DPS at 764-8559.

assist Georgia authorities
DPS officers and the Ann Arbor Police assisted Georgia authorities in effecting the arrest of a 22-year-old male affiliated with the University who had outstanding warrants issued against him for 22 counts of armed robbery, 49 counts of aggravated assault, 17 counts of possessing a weapon and 3 counts of kidnapping. All the incidents had occurred in Georgia. He has been extradited to Georgia.
Car stolen from Church St. structure, recovered
A 1994 Geo Tracker was reported stolen from the Church St. carport on Dec. 21, and was later recovered in Chelsea, Smiley says. Authorities in Chelsea are handling the incident, one of 40 car thefts reported to DPS in 1995.
New twist on computer theft
Smiley reports that there is a rise in thefts of computer equipment on campus, but they are not all easily detected because cases and monitors have been left intact. The internal hard drive, valued at $5,000, was taken from a computer in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building some time after August, but was not reported until December, when an internal inventory was completed.
“They are taking specific components and selling them,” Smiley says. He urges units with expensive computer equipment to keep it secured, to lock doors and to report missing equipment right away.

Woman arrested for
harboring a fugitive
A woman who is affiliated with the University was arrested Dec. 16 and charged with harboring a fugitive. DPS officers worked with Michigan State Police to apprehend the man, who is not affiliated with the University and who was wanted for possession with intent to deliver cocaine.
The woman was released on bond and her case is pending in 14th District Court.
Protesters arraigned
Warrants were issued for 12 persons, three of them affiliated with the University, who were involved in a disturbance during winter Commencement. Picketers were protesting speaker Neal Shine, publisher of the Detroit Free Press. Protesters were charged with disturbing the peace, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a $100 fine. The cases are pending in 15th District Court.
