Sunday robbery reported
A female student reported she had been robbed on a Sunday afternoon in March as she walked along Church Street. On March 26, the student told campus police an unknown man approached her at about 1:45 p.m. The man demanded her cell phone and shoulder bag. The thief took her bag but not the cell phone and fled in a white Ford van. The thief was described as a white male, about 20 years old, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with reddish hair and scruffy facial hair. He was last seen wearing a tan Carhart jacket and blue jeans. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at (734) 763-1131
Former radio station employee pleads
Justin Ebright, a former employee of Michigan Radio, pleaded no contest to one count of felony embezzlement April 12. A second count of conspiracy to embezzlement was dismissed. His sentencing is scheduled for May 18.
In addition, at the preliminary exam Michael Coleman and Jeremy Nordquist, co-defendants in the embezzlement trial, were bound over for trial in Washtenaw County Circuit Court. Their pre-trial hearing is scheduled for May 18.
The three former employees have been accused of embezzling money and services from Michigan Radio totaling $1,000 or more but less than $20,000. The embezzlement charges carry a penalty of five years in jail and/or $10,000 or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater. Nordquist also is charged with conspiracy to embezzlement, which carries a penalty of five years in jail, and/or $20,000 or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.
Burglaries from four residence hall rooms
Residents in East Quadrangle, Alice Lloyd and Mary Markley residence halls filed burglary reports in March with DPS. Residents from two East Quad rooms reported items had been taken early in the evening March 6, while the theft at Alice Lloyd was reported the next day. The Markley burglary was reported March 10. Laptop computers, digital cameras, iPods and other personal property were reported missing from the unlocked, unattended rooms.
DPS officers remind residents to shut their locked doors whenever they leave their rooms, even if it is for a few minutes. Additionally, anyone seeing an unknown person or observing suspicious behavior in a building is asked to call DPS immediately. Dial 911 from a campus phone or (734) 763-1131 from a cell phone.
Neighbor burns mail package
A 20-year-old Northwood Apartments resident was arrested March 12 after his neighbor told police she had observed him setting fire to her recently delivered mail package. The suspect was arrested for arson, minor in possession of alcohol, larceny and possession of a false driver’s license. The package contained a lamp, which was returned to the owner.
Source of three hall arsons unknown
Three small fires in residence halls in March resulted in one injury, minimal property damage and no suspects. On March 18 a custodian at Alice Lloyd suffered minor hand burns while taking two burning trash cans outside. The cans had been in a restroom and a trash closet. The fires burned out once the contents of the cans had been consumed.
A Housing Security officer found a small hand towel smoldering on the floor of the South Quadrangle elevator lobby March 1. The officer extinguished the fire without incident. On March 11 a resident reported she had discovered a greeting card taped to her door was on fire. She put out the fire before any damage was done to the door.
Unwelcome visitor enters apartment
A Northwood Apartments resident reported March 20 that her sister’s ex-boyfriend had entered her apartment without permission. He reportedly was searching for his ex-girlfriend, but left the apartment after he was told to leave.
