DPS seeks witnesses to armed robbery
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is continuing its investigation of a report of an armed robbery around midnight Feb. 4 on Thompson Street near Jefferson. A male student called DPS around 12:35 a.m. to report that three unknown men had approached him as he walked north on Thompson near the parking structure. One of the suspects brandished a black handgun, the victim told police. They took his cash and cell phone and then fled the area. The victim was not injured.
The suspects are described as black males in their early 20s. One suspect is approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and was last seen wearing a green hooded sweatshirt with dark writing on it. A second suspect was last seen wearing a green fatigue jacket with a hood and an unknown jersey underneath it.

Basketball game ends in assault
A 29-year-old staff member received facial injuries when he reportedly was punched Jan. 21 at the Intramural Sports Building. The victim told police he was playing in a pick-up basketball game about noon when an opponent he didn’t know suddenly punched him in the face and then left the building. The victim later sought medical treatment for his injuries.
Four burglaries reported at Bursley
A male resident of Bursley Residence Hall informed police Jan. 23 that he had confronted an unknown male leaving the victim’s room in possession of the victim’s laptop computer. The victim recovered the laptop and the suspect fled through a nearby exit. The resident, who was unhurt in the tussle, had left his room unattended and unlocked for a few minutes just before 6 p.m.
While DPS officers responded to the initial incident, two additional residents informed police that personal items were missing from their rooms. A female student reported her laptop computer was missing after her roommate left their door open while she went down the hall between 4:30-5 p.m.
A male resident reported several personal electronics devices totaling almost $1,000 were missing from his room. Two days later, a fourth student reported that his digital camera was missing from his room. He had last seen it Jan. 21.
DPS is pursuing several leads in the cases.
Intruder awakens East Quad resident
Two East Quadrangle residents informed police that an intruder had been in their room about 3:30 a.m. Jan. 29. One resident told police that someone walking around in her room had awakened her. The resident said she assumed it was her roommate and didn’t open her eyes. A few minutes later, however, her roommate arrived and reported that when she had attempted to open the door the first time, it had been slammed in her face. The roommates discovered their ground floor window was open but did not see anyone.
Door lock cut
Plant Operations staff reported to DPS Jan. 3 that the master lock and doorlock plate to the air conditioning shop in the lower level of the School of Public Policy Annex on East Huron Street had been cut during the holidays. Nothing was reported missing inside the shop.
Demanding beggar arrested
A Stephen M. Ross School of Business student reported Jan. 13 that an unknown person he described as “a tall homeless man” approached him inside Wyly Hall and asked for money. When the student gave him $10, the suspect demanded more. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and the prosecutor’s office authorized misdemeanor charges of drunk and disorderly as well as fingerprint refusal.
Patient reports fondling incident
A 25-year-old University Hospital patient reported Jan. 12 that a hospital aide had inappropriately touched him in early November. Another staff person reportedly was present during the incident. DPS is investigating the sexual assault charge.
DPS to target seatbelt violators
DPS officers will target seatbelt enforcement Feb. 16 along East Medical Center Drive. Michigan law requires the driver and front-seat passengers in moving vehicles—except bus passengers and a few other exemptions—to wear safety belts along with all passengers who are younger than 16 years.
Violation of the law will result in a $65 citation plus court costs.
