Computer thefts reported
Several laptop computers have been reported stolen in recent weeks. Laptops have been reported missing from Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, Alice Lloyd Residence Hall and West Quadrangle Residence Hall. Each was valued at between $1,500 and $2,250. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) notes that there are no suspects in any of the alleged thefts.
Bicycle thefts up
DPS is concerned about the number of bicycle thefts recently. Bicycles reported missing in the last month include a Cannondale mountain bike taken from West Quad, a Diamondback mountain bike from the School of Dentistry and a bicycle reported missing from Alice Lloyd.
DPS urges those who ride bicycles to lock them when they will be left unattended.
U-M student pleads no contest
A U-M freshman pled no contest to charges of possession of stolen property under $100 and driving with a suspended license. The student was stopped for a traffic violation March 3. The DPS officer noticed a staff paid parking permit in the car that had been reported stolen from a vehicle in October.
DPS recovers stolen property on North Campus
Two men who are not affiliated with the University were charged with receiving and concealing stolen property over $100 when DPS officers found tools and a disconnected stereo amplifier in a car on North Campus. A check on the amplifier revealed that it had been reported stolen.
Man found dead near Health Service Building
James Arthur Chamberlain Jr., age 52, was found dead last Monday near the Health Service Building on Fletcher Street.
DPS officers responded to a call at 9 p.m. Monday that reported a man lying outside the building. The caller believed he might be sleeping. When the officer arrived, the man was deceased. No cause of death has been determined and an investigation into the incident remains open.
