P-Card holders warned of fraud
U-M purchasing card holders were warned earlier this month to conduct a thorough review of recent statements as some account holders had been victimized by an area vendor. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating reports that Aarondale Co., a transportation provider, allegedly billed numerous purchasing cards for services not provided. The vendor’s account has been frozen, but DPS investigators would like to hear from people who believe they’ve been defrauded. Contact Officer Jason Forsberg at (734) 763-3434.
Visitor arrested for assaulting a police officer
Four young men from Belleville were apprehended June 3 in the Church Street parking structure after they attempted to elude police. While on a routine patrol of the parking structure, a DPS police officer approached a vehicle with several people inside after he detected the smell of burning marijuana. After the officer made contact with the occupants, the driver drove away, grazing the police officer.
The officer was not injured. Additional DPS officers responding to the scene stopped the car at the bottom of the structure.
The 20-year-old driver was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon (a four-year felony), fleeing and eluding a police officer (a five-year felony), and four misdemeanors: operating while in possession of drugs, driving while license suspended, possession of a controlled substance and transporting open intoxicants in a motor vehicle. The investigation will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for authorization once the lab testing results of the suspected drugs are received.
Two other occupants were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and a fourth occupant was cited for possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle. The four people are not affiliated with the University.
Henderson House burglarized
A University Housing security officer discovered an open rear window June 29 at Henderson House (1330 Hill St.). The window screen had been removed and set aside. A resident of the house reported she had not heard anything during the night, though two framed pictures and a chair were missing. DPS continues to investigate.
BSRB offices entered
Doors to several temporary offices for contractors working on the Biomedical Science Research Building (109 Zina Pitcher Place) were forced open, according to a DPS report filed June 1. Office inventories were being submitted to DPS for further investigation.
Small fire extinguished in Arb
Visitors to the Nichols Arboretum June 18 discovered a blue cloth on fire in a wooded area, and they stomped out the flames. The cloth was hanging from trees as a backdrop for an outdoor theater event. Only the cloth was damaged in the fire.
