Aggravated assaults reported
Six reports of aggravated assault were filed with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in May.
A 22-year-old student from Comstock Park was arrested May 16 for felonious assault after he was observed shooting fireworks off a South State Street apartment balcony shortly after
2 a.m. One of the firecrackers exploded above the head of a DPS officer. No one was injured in the incident.
Around 9 p.m. on May 16, a 25-year-old visitor flagged down a DPS police officer to report that he had been struck in the back with a tire wrench while riding his bicycle on Hill Street. The wrench reportedly had been thrown by a passenger in a car after the vehicle occupants and the victim had exchanged taunts. Police officers were unable to locate the suspects’ vehicle.
The county prosecutor denied authorizing arrest charges in connection with an incident May 19 at the Mosher-Jordan residence hall in which several student employees were joking around when one of them threatened his colleague with a knife. No one was injured in the incident, and it was turned over to Housing administration for review.
Two fights were reported at the Superball tournament May 22 in the Crisler Arena parking lot. A 14-year-old Pontiac boy was detained after he was observed throwing a rock that struck a 12-year-old girl. The girl was examined by on-site medical personnel, and the boy subsequently was released to the custody of his sister. The investigation findings have been submitted to the Oakland County prosecutor’s office. In the second incident, the mother of a 14-year-old Ann Arbor girl filed a report that her daughter and her friend had been involved in a fight with five schoolmates. The victim reported she had sustained bruises and scratches during the fight. DPS is continuing the investigation into the allegations.
A 20-year-old Northwood resident was arrested May 29 after she allegedly cut her boyfriend with a kitchen knife during an argument. He was treated at the U-M emergency room. The case has been closed because the victim did not want to pursue charges.
Discarded carpets set on fire at West Quad
Ann Arbor firefighters extinguished a fire outside West Quadrangle around 3 a.m. May 1. Carpeting and other discarded property had been set on fire. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the discarded property.
Laptop stolen from South Quad
A South Quad resident reported May 1 that his laptop was stolen from his room after he left his door unsecured while he left the room for two hours. There are no suspects in the case.
Learn emergency procedures for severe weather
Recent spring storms have generated severe weather alerts for thunderstorms and tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) is the country’s official voice for issuing warnings during life-threatening weather situations. Details about their procedures can be found at http://www.noaa.org.
DPS will pass along weather advisories issued by NWS via phone contacts and
e-mail, depending on the severity of conditions. In cases of tornado warnings, as well as in the event of a hazardous materials spill or nuclear attack, the city of Ann Arbor will activate the outdoor siren system with a three-minute steady wail to warn people outside to seek shelter.
University personnel are encouraged to monitor developing weather conditions via commercial radio stations, such as WAAM (1600 AM) or KOOL (107.1 FM), or various weather Internet Web sites. Please be cautious in overloading DPS telephones during severe weather conditions with status update questions.
