Crime alert issued
Two early-morning robberies were reported near campus May 9. In separate but related incidents, two men each reported they had been walking on the sidewalk shortly after midnight when they were approached by five young men. Each victim reported being punched and ordered to surrender money and property. The incidents occurred in the 700 block of Tappan Avenue and the 1100 block of Hill Street. Both victims received minor injuries. The incidents happened off campus and are being investigated by the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD). Student fondled on Diag
A student reported that as she was walking on the Central Campus Diag around 4 p.m. April 27, an unknown man approached and fondled her. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male about 17 to 19 years old, 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches, with a thin build. He had dark, short, curly, brown hair with blonde highlights, a faint mustache, and was last seen wearing a white, red and black jacket and light colored jeans. Student assaulted in Church carport
A DPS officer found a student April 17 bleeding in the stairwell of the Church Street parking structure. He told officers he had just been attacked by five or six unknown men. The student was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Thief caught near scene
A repeat offender was arrested April 30 outside the Student Activities Building (SAB) after a brief skirmish with police. Steven Lassiter, 47, of Ann Arbor, pleaded guilty May 12 to resisting and obstructing a police officer and larceny less than $200. Staff at SAB had called DPS to report a man soliciting money in the lobby. Officers found a suspect outside matching the description of the panhandler. During a discussion with the suspect, he fled and was caught by police. He was found with 1,200 pennies, which later were reported stolen from a collection conducted by staff at station WCBN in the SAB.
Student finds stranger in her room
A South Quad resident returned to her room around 4 a.m. April 22 to find an unknown student passed out in a chair in her room. She had left the room unlocked while she stepped away for a few minutes. The intoxicated student was transported to the hospital by ambulance. DPS will seek authorization from the prosecutor’s office for charges of unlawful entry and minor in possession of alcohol.
Mother arrested for hitting child
A Detroit mother, who was staying at the MedInn April 14, is awaiting her pre-trial hearing June 8 on charges of third degree child abuse. She was arrested for reportedly striking her 13-year-old son repeatedly with coat hangers.
Office trailer break-in
A temporary office trailer in lot M42 next to the Kellogg Eye Center on Wall Street was broken into between April 23 and 26. Nothing was reported missing, though paperwork and files were disturbed and doorknobs were broken.
Clothing burned at USB
A construction worker at the Undergraduate Science Building in the Palmer Drive development reported April 22 that he had left his jacket on a section of scaffold overnight, and when he returned he found it had been burned. A portion of the scaffold was charred from the fire, but no other damage was reported.
DPS joins Click it or Ticket campaign
U-M police officers will join other local and state law enforcement officers in a crackdown on unbuckled motorists as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, today through June 6. The state’s mandatory safety belt law requires the driver and front seat passengers to be buckled, and children under age 4 to be in an approved child safety seats. It also requires passengers up to age 16 to be buckled, in front or rear seats. In addition, drivers or passengers who have a shoulder harness placed under their arms or behind their backs can be ticketed for failure to buckle up properly. The fine is $65.
