DPS seeks suspect in larceny

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking a suspect in an attempted larceny March 10 at the Smith Law Library Legal Research Building. The suspect is described as a white man, 20-25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 215 pounds. He has blonde hair and a goatee. He was observed taking a wallet from a purse left on a desk. A witness retrieved the wallet and the suspect fled. Anyone with information regarding the incident or suspect is asked to call DPS at (734) 763-3434 or the University’s Anonymous Tip-Line at (800) 863-1355.

Man charged with assaulting a visitor

A Dexter man was arrested March 16 for allegedly using a chain and a chair to assault a visitor on the Diag and in Hatcher Graduate Library. Richard Curry, 19, was charged with felonious assault and bound over for trial at his preliminary exam March 26. The motivation for the assault still is not clear. Additionally, DPS is seeking assault charges for two other men who reportedly struck the victim with their fists. The victim did not seek medical attention.

Two sexual assaults reported

Two reports were filed with DPS in March for criminal sexual conduct. One incident involved a 19-year-old student who reportedly assaulted his date in his Bursley Hall room March 17. The second report led DPS to investigate allegations of a juvenile hospital patient soliciting an escort service March 30. DPS continues to investigate both incidents.

Three separate explosive devices reported

Three incidents involving explosive devices were reported to DPS within one week. Two female students were found exploding a bottle of liquid March 29 in lot M-75. Neither student was injured. Both women were released pending authorization from the county prosecutor.

A fully inflated plastic bottle filled with green liquid was discovered near a bench outside the Randall Laboratory March 27. Burn marks were observed on the cement next to the bottle. Hazardous materials responders from the Occupational Safety and Environmental Health department secured the bottle in a biohazard container before transporting it to a lab for analysis.

Glass panels in the ParkMaster pay booth in Lot NC10 were broken March 24 or 25. Remains of an ignition source were found at the scene indicating an explosion had occurred.

Explosive devices, including homemade projects, are illegal to manufacture or possess.

Man arrested for indecent exposure

A 19-year-old man from Brownstown, Mich., was arrested March 22 and charged with indecent exposure and minor in possession of alcohol after he reportedly exposed himself in a women’s restroom in Tisch Hall. He was released pending authorization from the prosecutor’s office.

Residence hall burglaries continue

Four burglaries from unlocked rooms in residence halls were reported in March. A cell phone and Mcard were reported stolen March 5 from a Mosher-Jordan room, a purse March 9 from Markley Hall, a wallet March 19 from East Quad,and a computer hard drive March 28 from Bursley Hall. Additionally, a key chain was reported stolen March 17 from the Modern Languages Building.

Two vehicles stolen, one recovered

A 1989 Chevrolet Caprice Classic was reported stolen March 5 from Lot SC11 near the Plant Operations plumbing shop. The Detroit Police Department recovered the vehicle March 13, but it had sustained significant damage and most of its removable parts, including the engine, were gone.

On March 18, a University employee reported that his 1998 Ford Ranger truck had been stolen from Lot NC50.

Burned towel found in closet

Burned remains of a towel were found in a trash closet at Couzens Hall March 25 after smoke activated the building’s fire alarm. No suspects have been identified in the arson investigation.
