Photo: Sweet softball success

Ranked No. 1 most of the season, the U-M softball team put the finishing touches on a magical season June 8 in Oklahoma City when the Wolverines claimed their first national championship. The Wolverines made NCAA history by becoming the first team from the Eastern time zone to win a softball national championship. Boasting a school-record 65-7 mark, U-M faced elimination three times during the Women’s College World Series (WCWS), but battled back to defeat two-time defending national champion UCLA in a best-of-three series. With the Wolverines and Bruins knotted at 1-1 in the 10th inning of the finale, WCWS Most Valuable Player Samantha Findlay blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence to account for the final score and give U-M the 52nd national title in the University’s athletics history.
