Replacement of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library’s primary bank of three elevators, which service both the north and south buildings, began earlier this summer. The new, fully upgraded modern elevators will operate more smoothly, faster and as one integrated system.
‘The replacement project will result in a significant improvement in service for Library patrons,’ says Scott Ward, head of the University Library’s Office of Finance and Facilities. ‘We’re looking forward to the time when the Hatcher Library will be able to serve patrons and staff with three new elevators sometime before spring 2001.’
The first elevator was removed from service July 1 and will be fully operational before the end of September. Work will then start, sequentially, on the two remaining elevators.
‘We hope that Library patrons will understand the situation and bear with us during the project,’ says Ward. ‘A great deal of thought and preparation went into the planning of this project to address the concerns of all affected parties and to minimize the inevitable turmoil caused by a task of this magnitude. We are confident that this improvement will be of significant benefit to the study and research environment of faculty and staff.’
