Photo Stories: Planning makes for a smooth Move-in

The University Record, September 5, 2000

New and returning students hit campus last week and are greeted with numerous programs and activities under a theme of ‘The Possibilities Are Endless,’ coordinated by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. A smooth Move-In was engineered by the Housing Division and uncounted numbers of other U-M units.

Department of Public Safety officer Steven Scott (above) lends a hand in directing parents the right way outside West Quadrangle. Cell phones were almost the norm and seemingly endless piles of everything students might need in the coming year (right) were temporarily stashed along curbsides.

Ongoing activities included open houses and information tables, poster sales and a poster giveaway at the Exhibit Museum, and exhibitions at the Museum of Art. Many of the residence halls scheduled social events and special meetings for new students. More formal activities included New Student Convocation, Graduate Student Orientation and a special program for new faculty. Students got into the Michigan spirit at ‘Maize Craze’ at Elbel Field, a giant pep rally with the Marching Band, cheerleaders and Dance Team. Many students got their first look at a Michigan football game Sept. 2. Free transportation to a local Meijer’s store offered an easy option for picking up things forgotten in the move.
