‘Arthur Miller at Work: The Photographs of Inge Morath’ is on display in the Works on Paper Gallery at the Museum of Art through Nov. 5. Shown is ‘Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan on the Pond, Roxbury, CT,’ a 1963 gelatin silver print by Morath.
Morath has created a fascinating body of images of her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, throughout their 40-year marriage. The photographs bridge the divide between the public and private aspects of the man. Miller as director and author is shown in the company of other well-known literary and theatrical figures. The private Miller is caught sitting in the seats of the ancient Greek theater at Epidaurus, and in a shot of his study, filled with personal possessions.
Widely known for her portraiture, Morath’s photo essays have appeared in Life, Paris Match, the Saturday Evening Post and Vogue. She is widely known for her portraiture. This cumulative view of Miller reflects her sympathetic knowledge of her husband’s work as well as her own creative insights.
Miller, a U-M alumnus, will be on campus at the end of October for ‘Arthur Miller’s America: Theater and Culture in a Century of Change,’ an international symposium in honor of his 85th birthday.
