An early morning fire Aug. 17 destroyed a bus and tools in the bus garage on Kipke Drive, and caused damage to other vehicles and the building expected to be in excess of $1 million, according to Patrick Cunningham, director of Parking and Transportation Services. The fire at Transportation Services was the third late summer campus fire.
Two fires on Aug. 7 damaged rooms on the fifth floor of the West Quad residence hall and a biophysics laboratory in the Chemistry Building. Repairs to the roof of West Quad reportedly caused a fire on the roof in the late afternoon and construction workers at the Chemistry Building were working on an outside wall when sparks from their equipment ignited material inside the wall. Damage is estimated at $100,000–$750,000 in West Quad, and structural damage in the Chemistry Building was estimated at approximately $20,000. Equipment loss is expected to bring the total higher.
