Twenty-one ninth-grade students from Osborn High School in Detroit spent a day on campus earlier this month to learn how to prepare themselves for college. Their visit was hosted by the School of Education and is one of several events involving the students, their families and their teachers in collaboration with the School of Social Work.
Two successful parents’ nights were held last fall and another college day is planned for May, according to James Muchmore, lecturer in the School of Education. Several School of Social Work interns are completing their practica at Osborn.
While here, the students were hosted by a group of U-M students who took them on a tour of Central Campus (above) and East Quadrangle Residence Hall. They also met with an admissions counselor, who explained what universities look for in applicants, and listened to a panel discussion by several Osborn alumni currently enrolled at the U-M. The Osborn alumni talked about some of the challenges they faced while in high school and offered advice about which classes to take in order to best prepare for college and how to stay focused on that goal.
“This was a very positive experience for the Osborn students,” Muchmore says “It not just a trip to the U-M, but rather an opportunity to come here and be treated as special guests. The U-M staff and students who met with them were very welcoming and supportive. It was a special event that they won’t soon forget.”
