Open Michigan initiative launches new partnership, website

Open Michigan is relaunching as the home for all things open at the University of Michigan — freely accessible, openly licensed documents and media used for teaching, learning and research.

The site includes expertise and services for open educational resources, open data, and open publications.

The new Open Michigan is a partnership of the U-M Library and Health Information Technology and Services. The library and HITS have worked closely together in the past to host events and promote sharing. By officially joining forces, Open Michigan can provide the university community with a ‘one-stop shop’ for information and resources about open content of all kinds.

Researchers and learners from all over the world can find information about sharing research data, identifying reputable open access journals, and using openly licensed content in their work.

The new site still has all of the previously available open educational resources collections, and soon will begin to publish new materials, such as new solutions sets for Dr. Krishna Garikipati’s very popular YouTube lecture series, Finite Element Methods, and Dr. Kelvin Chou’s training on improving hospital-based care for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

“Since the initiative started in 2008, our goal has always been to support the university’s mission. We have had much success in effectively maximizing the impact and reach of materials created by our expert faculty, while providing support with copyright, licensing, content development and publishing,” said Ted Hanss, UMHS associate chief information officer.

“It has been our pleasure serving the university and far beyond for these past eight years, and we look forward to many more.”

Open Michigan services include:

• Consulting and training: Personalized consulting and training for creators on copyright, licensing, design, and implementation related to open materials.

• Content development: Searching for open content, copyright clearance, remixing, and development of new content to support faculty wishing to create open works.

• Publishing and promotion: Publishing, marketing, maintenance, user analysis and archiving of open content in the Open Michigan and Deep Blue digital content repositories.

• Fostering partnerships for collaborative creation: Connecting faculty to sources of expertise, communities of practice, and global networks of open content creators and advocates.

“We have long enjoyed the partnership with HITS, and we look forward to working together to make sure that publicly-funded research (and its underlying data!) is accessible to citizens, provide a platform for teachers and students to find and reuse high-quality educational materials, and educate scholars about the benefits of sharing their work with the world beyond our campus,” said Charles Watkinson, associate university librarian for publishing.
