Open enrollment ended Oct. 30: Next steps

Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of articles from the Benefits Office on Open Enrollment.

Open Enrollment ended Oct. 30, but Open Enrollment season events are not completed. Here are some reminders of what is to come.

Confirmation Statements

Approximately one week after Open Enrollment ends, Confirmation Statements are mailed to everyone at the University who is eligible for benefits. When you receive your Confirmation Statement, check it very carefully. It will show the benefit plans you selected for 1999 as well as 1999 coverage information for each of your dependents. Confirmation Statements may show a blank space where a newly-enrolled dependent’s name should appear. If so, fill in the correct name plus any other information requested, and return the statement to the Benefits Office immediately.

• If you have 20- to 24-year-old dependents on your health insurance coverage, those dependents were added to your dental and vision plans (if you are enrolled in those plans) and will be listed on the statement.

• If you added dependents to your benefit plans on BEL, they will appear on the Confirmation Statement. The space for the dependent’s name may be blank. Please fill in the correct name(s), plus any other information that is requested, and return the Confirmation Statement to the Benefits Office immediately. Keep a copy for your records.

• If dependents appear on your Confirmation Statement for whom you do not wish to provide coverage, call BEL during the Adjustment Period, Nov. 9–25, and remove them using the appropriate dependent number. From Ann Arbor, call 763-0425; from elsewhere in the United States, call (800) 236-1492.

Adjustment Period

If you find errors on your Confirmation Statement, or decide to change any of your elections for 1999, you can call BEL during the Adjustment Period, Nov. 9–25, to make changes or corrections. The Benefits Enrollment Line (BEL) is open every day during the Adjustment Period, including weekends, 7:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m., Eastern time, except BEL will close at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 25.

Final Confirmation Statement

If you make changes or corrections during the Adjustment Period, you will receive a final (second) Confirmation Statement after the Adjustment Period ends. If you still find errors on your Confirmation Statement, call the Benefits Office immediately. If the name of a new dependent is not printed on your final Confirmation Statement, fill in the name on the statement and return the Confirmation Statement to the Benefits Office immediately. Keep a copy for your records.
