O’Connor will speak at U-M commencement Dec.15
Sandra Day O’Connor, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will be the main speaker at the University’s winter commencement Dec. 15.
Some 2,000 U-M students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this winter. The commencement exercises will begin at 2 p.m. in Crisler Arena.
Honorary degrees will be awarded to O’Connor, film-maker Robert Altman, lawyer John H. Pickering and astronomer Vera C. Rubin.
Winter commencement tickets will be distributed Dec. 9-12 in the Lydia Mendelssohn Box Office, Michigan League. Up to six tickets per graduating student will be distributed. Extra tickets, if available, will be distributed on Dec. 13.
Non-graduating students, faculty and staff can get up to two tickets from the Michigan Union Ticket Office Dec. 12-13.
Timothy D. Leuliette, recently named president and chief operating officer at Penske Corp., will speak at the U-M-Dearborn commencement ceremony Dec. 22. The date is memorable to Leuliette—it is the 25th anniversary of the day he received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Dearborn. He also holds a master’s degree from the Business School.
“He is a terrific speaker,” notes U-M-Dearborn Chancellor James C. Renick, “and I am sure that our students and their families will enjoy his remarks and benefit from hearing him.”
Wesley Rae, emeritus professor of English, will be the keynote speaker for the U-M-Flint’s commencement at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 in the IMA Sports Arena. Rae, who has served the U-M-Flint for 37 years, received the Faculty Achievement Award from students for his teaching excellence as well as two distinguished professor awards, the Special Merit for Teaching Award and recognition from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards’ Distinguished Faculty Member award. He taught British, Greek and Roman literature.
