After earning his Ph.D. from U-M in 1969, Shyn embarked on a distinguished career as a research scientist at the Space Physics Research Laboratory in the College of Engineering, working with NASA and the National Science Foundation.

His contributions to science were significant, but he will be remembered most for his compassion, humility and the countless lives he touched beyond his work.

Shyn was a cornerstone of the Korean church in Ann Arbor, where he created a sense of belonging for generations of families. He welcomed everyone with kindness and warmth, offering his time, energy and love to build a vibrant community. Through his leadership, he gave people a place to call home, never seeking recognition but always giving selflessly.

Shyn is survived by his beloved wife, Shin Ai Shyn, and their children, Steve, Rosa and Aimee, all proud U-M alumni. He was the cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren: Olivia, Lauren, Jessica, Allison, Chloe, Kiet, Michael, Phoebe and Spencer, who adored his wisdom, generosity and unwavering love.

Shyn’s legacy is one of intellectual curiosity, kindness and service. His impact will live on in his family, his church and all who were fortunate to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the Shyn family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to honor his dedication to helping others and to support lifesaving research and care.
